Here’s Tuition Trick #3: Show deadlines who’s boss

First-come, first served

Financial aid is given out on a first-come, first served basis. The sooner you apply to a school, get accepted, and submit financial aid forms, the more likely you are to get in and get awarded.

Think of it this way: If I said to you “The Walmart in town is going to give away everything on its shelves starting January 1,” you know there would be people lined up days in advance to make sure they got their piece of the pie. If you casually stroll in on March 1, those shelves are going to be empty and you’re going to be out of luck. The same goes for getting financial aid.

The sooner you start, the sooner you’ll get the results you want

Kids go from diapers to diplomas so fast that a lot of parents stick their heads in the sand and pretend it will all go away. They procrastinate until it’s too late -- and their children suffer the consequences. Don’t be an ostrich parent!
